Unblock: blocked sites and what opens them
A block is always somebody's setting: a school filter, an office firewall, a regional licence. The right fix depends on who set it.

Unblock websites: the short version
A site can be unreachable for three different reasons, and the fix is different for each. A local network, such as a school or an office, filters by address or by category. An internet provider blocks on a legal order. Or the site itself refuses visitors from your region. People search for unblocked sites as if it were one problem, but a trick that beats a school filter does nothing against a regional licence.
An encrypted tunnel solves the first two in most cases, because the network only sees an HTTPS session to a server outside it. For the third, you need an exit location in a country the site accepts. Everything else in this section is detail around those two facts.
Guides in this section
- Unblock a website: five methods compared, from a DNS change to a full tunnel.
- YouTube at school, at work and while travelling.
- Proxy sites: when a free web proxy is enough and when it breaks the page.
- Instagram on a filtered network, in the app and in the browser.
What we will not help with
We do not publish ways around paywalls, and the key is not for piracy mirrors or gambling platforms. Those are regulated areas and we stay out of them. We also suggest reading the acceptable use policy of a school or employer before going around its filter. A filter on a network you do not own is a rule, and breaking it can have consequences that no tool protects you from.
Inside those lines there is a lot of legitimate ground: a news site blocked by an overcautious category filter, a video platform closed on campus Wi-Fi during a break, your own home services refusing you while you travel.
How to tell which block you are facing
- ✓The page fails on one Wi-Fi network but opens on mobile data: the local network is filtering.
- ✓The page fails on every network in your country but opens elsewhere: a provider level or legal block.
- ✓The page loads and then says the content is not available in your region: the site is checking your location.
- ✓The browser shows a certificate warning: the network is inspecting traffic. Do not click through it.
- ✓Only one app fails while the website works: the app is blocked by port or by domain.
The fix that covers most cases
- 1
Get a key from @bsr_key_bot. The first five days are free and need no card.
- 2
Add it to a free client on the device that is blocked.
- 3
Choose the nearest location if a local network is the problem, or a location in the right country if the site is region locked.
- 4
Reload the page. If it still fails, switch location once before trying anything else.

Questions people ask before the first key
Is it legal to unblock websites?
Using a VPN is legal in the United States. What you do through it is still subject to the same laws, and a school or employer can enforce its own network rules regardless of the tool you use.
Why do unblocked sites lists stop working so fast?
Because they list mirrors and proxies, and filters add those to the blocklist within days. A tunnel does not depend on a list, which is why it keeps working.
Will a VPN work on school Wi-Fi?
Usually. VLESS over Reality looks like an ordinary HTTPS session, so most filters let it through. Some managed devices block installing a client at all, and that is a device rule, not a network one.
Does a tunnel slow the blocked site down?
Slightly. Traffic makes one extra hop. With a nearby location the difference is small enough that video and calls work normally.
Can the network owner see what I opened?
They can see that your device holds an encrypted connection to a server. They cannot see the sites inside it.
What if the site blocks VPN addresses too?
Some do. Switch to another location first. If the site blocks every data centre address, no VPN will open it and we will not pretend otherwise.
