VPN browser plugin for Chrome: the short answer
A Chrome plugin for VPN use is nearly always an encrypted proxy that serves the browser alone. Traffic from Chrome goes to the provider's server. Every other program on the computer connects as before. That is fine when the goal is to open a site in the browser. It is not what most people understand by a VPN, and it carries a particular risk: to do its job, the extension asks for permission to read and change data on all websites.
That is why the publisher of any Chrome VPNs extension you install matters more than its star rating.
What a Chrome extension covers
- Pages and downloads inside that Chrome profile.
- Nothing outside the browser: mail apps, messengers, games and system updates are not affected.
- Not other browsers, and not Chrome's incognito windows unless you allow that separately.
- DNS lookups may or may not go through it, depending on the extension.
- WebRTC can reveal your real address unless the extension handles it.
Permissions and ownership checks
- ✓Look at the permission list. Read and change all your data on all websites is normal for a proxy extension, and it is also everything a spy would need.
- ✓Find the company behind it: name, address and privacy policy.
- ✓Check the last update date and the number of users. Note that extensions are sometimes sold to new owners.
- ✓Prefer extensions from providers that also offer a full application. Those depend on their reputation.
- ✓Remove extensions you no longer use. They keep their access for as long as they are installed.
Why we do not ship an extension
A BSR key uses VLESS over Reality, and an extension cannot run that. Browser extension APIs offer proxy settings and not raw tunnels. We would also rather not ask you to give our code the ability to read your pages. The setup we suggest is a desktop client running in proxy mode. Chrome follows the system proxy automatically, so the browser is covered without any extension. Switch the client to TUN mode and the rest of the computer is covered too.
Chrome through a key, without an extension

ChromeOS is a different case. Personal Chromebooks can run Android clients from the Play Store, and those cover the whole device. Questions people ask before the first key
Is a VPN browser plugin Chrome extension a real VPN?
Usually not. It is a proxy for that browser. It hides your IP from websites and leaves other apps untouched.
Are free Chrome VPNs safe?
Some are, from known providers. Many unknown ones have been caught collecting or selling browsing data. Check the owner and the permissions.
Can an extension read my passwords?
An extension that can read and change all site data can see what you type on pages. That is why the publisher matters so much.
Does Chrome follow the system proxy automatically?
Yes. On Windows and macOS Chrome uses the system proxy settings, so a desktop client covers it without any add-on.
Does incognito mode make a difference?
No. Incognito only stops local history from being saved. Network traffic is the same.
