What a website learns from my IP
- ▸The name of your internet provider. This is the answer to the search what is my IP ISP.
- ▸An approximate area, usually the city or region where the provider registered that block of addresses.
- ▸The type of connection: home broadband, mobile, company network or data centre.
- ▸Nothing about your name, street, phone number or browsing history. None of that is contained in the address.
Where is my IP located, and why the map is wrong
Lookup pages draw a pin on a map, and the pin is frequently in the wrong town. The databases behind them record where the provider registered a range of addresses, which is often a regional hub. So the answer to where is my IP is approximate: the country is right nearly always, the state usually, the city sometimes and the street never.
The scary banner that says your location is exposed is relying on you not knowing this. It is an advertisement, and the information it displays is the same every site has always received.
Why is my IP different from yesterday
Most home and mobile connections get a dynamic address from a pool. A router restart, a lease that expires or a move from Wi-Fi to mobile data can each give you a new one. That is normal. A fixed address is a paid extra that most households never need.
If the address and the provider both change while a VPN is connected, that is the tunnel doing its work. Sites now see the server's address. Your own stays known only to the VPN server, which needs it in order to reply to you.

Questions people ask before the first key
What is my IP used for by websites?
To send the reply back to you, and often to guess your country for language, pricing and licensing. Some sites also use it to limit abuse.
Can someone find my house from my IP?
No. A lookup gives the provider and a rough area. Matching an address to a customer needs the provider's records and a legal order.
Who my IP belongs to, me or the provider?
The provider. It is registered to them and lent to your connection, often only for a while.
Why do I have two addresses, IPv4 and IPv6?
Many providers now run both. Sites use whichever they support. A good VPN setup covers both, otherwise the IPv6 one can leak.
Is it illegal to hide my IP address?
No. Using a VPN is legal in the United States, and companies do it every day for their staff.
Does a VPN give me the same new address every time?
Usually not. You share the server's addresses with other users, which is good for privacy.
