VPN and China: the short answer
China's national firewall blocks Google services, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, X, many Western news sites and Telegram. It also detects and interrupts the common VPN protocols. OpenVPN and WireGuard have recognisable traffic patterns, and the firewall has years of practice in spotting them. What tends to get through is traffic that looks like ordinary HTTPS to an ordinary website. VLESS over Reality, which BSR uses, was designed for exactly that environment.
Nobody can honestly promise that a connection will work in China on a given day. Filtering tightens around political events and varies by city and by carrier. What you can control is preparation.
Set these up before you fly
- The client app. App stores inside China do not carry VPN clients, and Google Play is blocked.
- The key. Our bot lives on Telegram, and Telegram is blocked in China. Get the key and save it offline.
- A second client as a backup, with the same key imported.
- Offline copies of maps, tickets and hotel addresses, in case you are disconnected for a while.
- Roaming on your home SIM. Roaming data is often routed through your home carrier and is less filtered than local Wi-Fi.
Why VPNs in China fail so often
The firewall does more than block addresses. It inspects handshakes, measures traffic patterns and actively probes suspected servers to see how they respond. A server that answers like a VPN is blocked within hours. Commercial services rotate addresses to keep ahead, with mixed results, which is why articles on the best VPNs for China contradict one another from month to month.
Reality answers probes the way a real, well known website would, so there is no distinctive response to flag. That is a design advantage and not a guarantee. Choose locations close to China, such as Tokyo in our list, because distance adds delay on top of the firewall's own.
A pre-trip checklist

The legal picture
Chinese regulations require VPN services to be licensed by the state, and unlicensed services are not permitted to operate. Enforcement has focused on people who sell or run such services inside China, not on foreign visitors who use one on their own phone. Even so, this is a grey area and not a right, and the rules are applied unevenly. Use the connection discreetly, avoid political activity through it and follow your employer's guidance if you are travelling for work. Does a VPN work in China?
Some do on most days, and none work every day. Protocols that imitate ordinary HTTPS have the best record. Preparation matters more than the brand.
Can I get the key after I arrive?
