The four funding models
- Advertising: banners or video ads inside the app. It works, but it means an ad library sits inside the tool you installed for privacy.
- Data cap: a few gigabytes a month, enough for email and maps, not for video. Honest, visible and limited by design.
- Shop window tier: one or two busy locations, reduced speed and frequent reminders to upgrade. Annoying, but you can see the whole deal.
- Your data or your line: the app collects browsing data for resale, or routes other customers' traffic through your connection. This one is rarely stated in plain words.
Why top VPNs lists do not settle it
Pages titled best VPNs or top VPNs rank a handful of paid brands and then add a free section at the bottom for search traffic. The free section is seldom tested with any care, and the order follows commission. People who type best VPN network free or what are the best VPNs are hoping a list will decide for them. It cannot, because the right free service depends on what you need it for: ten minutes on airport Wi-Fi is a different job from a month of evening video.
For short, occasional use a capped free tier from a known company is fine. For daily use every free model starts to pinch within a week, and that is by design.
Checks before you install any free VPN

- ✓The privacy policy says what is logged in concrete terms, not only that privacy matters.
- ✓The app asks for no permissions beyond creating a VPN connection.
- ✓The limits are stated up front: gigabytes, locations, speed.
- ✓There is a paid plan. A free product with no paid plan has to earn from you in another way.
Where five free days fit

Questions people ask before the first key
Are VPNs free if I only need one for a day?
For a day, a capped free tier from a known provider does the job, and so does our five day trial. Neither needs a card.
Which VPNs free of charge are dangerous?
The ones that do not explain how they earn, ask for broad permissions, or belong to a company you cannot identify. Several such apps have been caught reselling user bandwidth.
What are the best VPNs if I refuse to pay?
The ones with a visible data cap and a paid plan next to it. The cap is the price, and at least it is printed on the label.
Why are free tiers so slow in the evening?
Because free users share a small number of servers and paying users get priority. It is the shop window model working as intended.
Does BSR sell my data during the trial?
No. There is no account, no email and no logging, so there is nothing to sell. The trial exists to show the product, not to collect anything.
Can I keep getting new trials?
