Minecraft VPNs in short

Players look for Minecraft VPNs for three reasons: the game is blocked on a school or office network, they want to keep their home IP address away from a server and its players, or they hope for lower ping. A tunnel handles the first two well. The third is mostly a myth, because an extra hop adds latency unless your normal route is unusually bad.

There is a fourth reason people rarely say out loud, which is getting around a ban. We do not support that. It breaks server rules, servers block known VPN addresses to prevent it, and it tends to end with a wider ban.

What a tunnel does for Minecraft

  • Opens the launcher, the login servers and multiplayer on networks that block games.
  • Hides your home IP from server owners, and from other players on peer to peer or self hosted worlds.
  • Avoids a bad route between your provider and a particular server region.
  • Lets you join friends on a regional server while travelling.
  • Does not improve frame rate, fix server lag or reduce ping on a route that is already good.

Java, Bedrock and blocked networks

School filters usually block the authentication and session servers, so the launcher cannot sign in. Some also block the default multiplayer ports. Through a full tunnel all of that traffic goes to the VPN server first, and the filter sees one encrypted session. Java Edition uses TCP. Bedrock uses UDP, so the client on your device must carry UDP as well. Hiddify, v2rayN and NekoRay do this in TUN mode.

On a managed school laptop you may not be able to install anything, and that is a device rule that no network trick can change. On your own laptop it is your decision, taken with the school's policy in mind.

Setting it up on a PC

  1. 1Request five free days from @bsr_key_bot on Telegram. No card and no account.
  2. 2Install Hiddify, v2rayN or NekoRay and import the key from the clipboard.
  3. 3Turn on TUN mode so the game is covered, not only the browser.
  4. 4Pick the location nearest to the game server, not the one nearest to you, if the two differ.
  5. 5Start the launcher, sign in and join. If a server refuses the connection, read the next section.

Servers that block VPN addresses

Large public servers keep lists of data centre ranges and either refuse them or ask for extra verification. They do it to stop ban evasion and bot attacks, and it is their right. If a server rejects you, try one other location. If it still does, play on that server without the tunnel. Your account is not at risk for trying. Connecting through a VPN is not an offence. Evading a ban is.

Self hosted worlds and small community servers almost never block anything, and those are the places where hiding your home IP is most useful.

Honest expectations about ping

A nearby VPN location adds a few milliseconds. A distant one adds many.
Ping improves only if your provider's direct route to the server is worse than the detour.
Test both ways at the hour you usually play and keep the better one.
Packet loss on Wi-Fi hurts more than the tunnel does. Use a cable if you can.
Five devices fit on one key, so a sibling's laptop is covered as well.

Notes to the statement

Questions people ask before the first key

Are Minecraft VPNs allowed by Mojang?

There is no rule against using a VPN. Individual servers set their own policies, and many block VPN addresses to prevent ban evasion.

Will a VPN get me unbanned from a server?

We do not support that. Ban evasion breaks server rules and usually leads to a wider ban.

Does a VPN lower Minecraft ping?

Rarely. It helps only when your direct route is poor. Otherwise expect a small increase.

Can I play Bedrock through the tunnel?

Yes, if the client runs in TUN mode so that UDP traffic is carried. Proxy mode alone is not enough.

Why can the launcher not sign in at school?

The network blocks the login servers. Through a tunnel those requests pass as ordinary encrypted traffic.

Does it work on consoles?

Consoles cannot run a client. A router that holds the key covers them, along with everything else behind it.

Still unsure?
