Mac and VPN: the short answer
A Mac needs two things: a client that creates the tunnel and a service to connect to. With BSR the client is a free app, Hiddify or V2Box, and the service is a key from our Telegram bot. macOS asks you to approve a new VPN configuration, you agree, and every app on the Mac then goes through the tunnel. Nothing needs to be set by hand in System Settings.

Setup on macOS

The macOS prompts, explained
The first prompt asks whether the app may add VPN configurations. That is the system permission to create the tunnel, and it appears once. A client downloaded outside the App Store may also trigger Gatekeeper, which checks that the developer signed the app. Open it from the Applications folder the first time. If macOS still refuses, allow it under Privacy and Security in System Settings. You need to do that only for software you downloaded from the project's own page.
Both clients run natively on Apple silicon, and Intel Macs are supported as well. Using a VPN with a mac that is a few years old works the same way.

Questions people ask before the first key
Do I need to change anything in System Settings?
No. The client adds the VPN configuration after you approve the prompt. It then appears under Network and you can leave it alone.
Are there good free VPNs for mac?
A few capped free tiers from known providers are fine for light use. For daily use expect to pay someone a few dollars a month.
Does it work on Apple silicon?
Yes. Both Hiddify and V2Box run natively on M series Macs and on Intel models.
Why does macOS say the app cannot be opened?
