VPNs for Windows in short
The VPN screen built into Windows supports older protocols such as IKEv2 and L2TP. It cannot read a VLESS key. So VPNs for windows that pass filtered networks always bring their own client. With BSR the client is free and open source, v2rayN or Hiddify, and the service is a key from our Telegram bot. You download the client, paste the key and connect.
This is the opposite of most windows VPN software free offers, where the free part is an installer and the limits come later. Here the software is free permanently and the key is free for five days.
Setup on Windows 10 and 11
- 1Download v2rayN or Hiddify from the project's GitHub releases page. Choose the package marked for Windows 64 bit.
- 2Unpack or install it and start the program. SmartScreen may warn about a new download. Confirm only if the file came from the original repository.
- 3Get the key from @bsr_key_bot in Telegram and copy the vless:// line.
- 4In v2rayN press Ctrl+V in the main window, or use import from clipboard in the menu. In Hiddify click new profile.
- 5Select the profile and enable the system proxy, or TUN mode for full coverage, then connect.
Proxy mode or TUN mode
In proxy mode the client opens a local port and sets the Windows system proxy to it. Browsers and most desktop apps follow it. Games, some launchers and command line tools do not. TUN mode adds a virtual network adapter and routes everything through the tunnel. It needs administrator rights and is the better choice for daily use. If your only goal is the browser, proxy mode is lighter and needs no elevated rights.
People who search free browser VPNs usually want the first behaviour. A desktop client in proxy mode provides it without an extension reading your pages.
Common Windows problems and fixes
- Nothing connects after import: check the system clock. TLS fails when the time is wrong by more than a few minutes.
- The browser works but a game does not: switch from proxy mode to TUN mode.
- TUN mode will not start: run the client as administrator once.
- Another VPN or an antivirus web shield is interfering: disable its network filter, or add an exception.
- Internet stops after closing the client: clear the system proxy in Windows settings, or restart the client and exit from its menu.

Both clients can start with Windows and connect automatically. v2rayN keeps its settings in its own folder, so moving to a new PC means copying that folder. Updates come from the same GitHub page, and the clients notify you about them. Nothing from BSR is installed at any point, so uninstalling means deleting the client and nothing more.

Can I use the built in Windows VPN settings?
Not with this key. The built in client supports IKEv2, L2TP and similar protocols, not VLESS.
Is v2rayN safe to run?
It is open source and widely used. Download it only from the original 2dust repository on GitHub.
Why does SmartScreen warn me?
It flags files that are downloaded infrequently. Check the source, and continue only if it is the project's own release page.
Are there free VPNs for windows without limits?
Not sustainably. Someone pays for the servers. Our trial is unlimited for five days and then stops.
Does it work on Windows on ARM?
Hiddify and v2rayN publish ARM64 builds. Check the releases page for the right file.
How do I remove everything?
Exit the client from its tray menu, delete its folder or uninstall it, and check that the Windows proxy setting is off.
