The short answer

How do you unblock a website? Find out who is saying no, then pick the lightest fix for that case. A timeout, a blocked-by-administrator page, a plain 403 and a certificate warning all look like one problem, and they have four different causes. A change that fixes one does nothing for the other three.

The decision takes two minutes with a phone on mobile data as a reference. If the page opens there but not on your Wi-Fi, the network is the blocker. If it fails on both, the cause is wider.

What each message usually means

  • The connection times out or resets: a filter on the network, or the site itself is down. Test it from mobile data.
  • A page from the school, office or hotel saying the category is blocked: a policy of that network. The block is deliberate and the page names it.
  • A 403 or a message that the content is not available in your region: the site is deciding based on your address, not the network.
  • A certificate warning on a site you know: something in the middle is intercepting. Stop and do not click through it.
  • The page loads empty or half drawn: often a content blocker or a DNS filter, not a block of the site.

Try the fixes in this order

  1. 1

Reload on mobile data to see whether the network is the cause.

  2. 2

Switch the DNS on your device to a public resolver. It beats filters that work only on names, takes a minute and costs nothing.

  3. 3

Try another browser without extensions, to rule out your own content blocker.

  4. 4

If the block is on the network and the page is allowed by the rules, use a tunnel that looks like ordinary HTTPS. A key from our bot does that: ten days free, no card.

  5. 5

If the site itself refuses your region, a tunnel to the right country changes what it sees. Whether you may use the content from there depends on the site's terms.

When not to bother

A block on a school or work network is a policy, and breaking it can cost you more than the page is worth. Read the acceptable use rules first. A site that is down for everyone cannot be unblocked by anything you do. And a service that has banned your account stays banned from any address.

Web proxy pages that promise one click access work for simple articles and break logins, video and anything that needs scripts. They also see everything you type, so keep a password out of them.

Before you go around a block

  • ✓Know which of the four causes you have. Guessing wastes the evening.
  • ✓Never click through a certificate warning.
  • ✓Do not enter a password into a proxy page.
  • ✓Keep to the rules of the network you are on, and to the law about the content itself.
  • ✓BSR does not help with gambling platforms or piracy mirrors, and no key opens everything.

Choosing, and who is telling you

We sell the key mentioned above, so this page has an interest in suggesting it. The ladder puts free steps first for that reason, and says plainly where a key is no use. The page was written by BSR with the help of AI, based on how the service is set up.

Notes to the statement

Questions people ask before the first key

How do you unblock a website on a school computer?

First read the school's rules. If the network allows personal use of the page, a free DNS change or a key may open it, but a managed device can block both.

Why does a site open on my phone but not on Wi-Fi?

The Wi-Fi network filters it. Mobile data goes through your carrier, which has its own, usually lighter, rules.

Is a web proxy a good way to unblock a website?

For one public page, sometimes. For logins, streaming and anything with scripts it usually fails, and the operator reads the session.

Does changing DNS always work?

No. It beats blocks made on names only. A filter that drops the connection by address ignores it.

Can the site tell I use a tunnel?

It sees a server's address and may treat data center ranges differently from home lines. Some services block them.

Is it legal to unblock a website?

Rules differ by country and change, and the terms of the network and the site apply too. You are responsible for local law.
