How location by IP address is compiled
- ▸Registries record which provider owns each block of addresses and in which country.
- ▸Providers publish, or data companies infer, which region a block serves.
- ▸Apps with location permission report pairs of address and GPS position, which refines the data for busy blocks.
- ▸Databases update on different schedules, so two services can disagree about the same address.
- ▸Mobile networks route whole regions through a few gateways, so phones often appear in another state.
What my IP address and location reveal together
A site that runs an IP address location lookup learns your provider, your approximate area and the type of connection. It uses that to choose a language, show local prices, enforce licensing by country and flag unusual logins. It does not learn your name or your address. Only the provider can connect an address to a subscriber, and it discloses that under a legal process, not to a website.
Pages that display my IP address with location in large red letters are showing the same data every site has always had. The alarm is there to sell something.
Why different tools disagree
Search whats my IP location on three services and you may get three cities. Each one buys or builds its own database, and none of them is wrong in the sense of being broken. They are all approximate. If a streaming or banking service places you in the wrong region, the cause is usually a provider that recently moved a block of addresses. It normally corrects itself within weeks as the databases catch up.
The phrasing of the search makes no difference. What is my IP address location, whats my IP and location and whats my IP address and location all return the same kind of estimate.
Limits to keep in mind
- ✓A VPN changes the network location only. GPS, Wi-Fi positioning and account settings are separate signals.
- ✓A phone app with location permission knows where you are regardless of the tunnel.
- ✓Some services combine signals and notice when the address and the GPS disagree.
- ✓Lookup databases may take a while to place a new server correctly.

Can a location by IP address lookup find my home?
No. It finds the provider's registered area. Street level precision does not exist in these databases.
Why does my IP location show another state?
Your provider or mobile carrier routes traffic through a regional gateway, and the database records the gateway.

Language and currency selection, licensing by country, fraud checks and traffic statistics.
How do I correct a wrong IP location?
You cannot edit it yourself. Providers and database companies update it over time. Some services let you set your region manually in the account.
Does whats my IP location address change with a VPN?

Do streaming services rely only on the IP location?
