How to find your IP address on each device
Public and private: which one matters when
The private address only matters inside your home: printer setup, port forwarding, a game server on the local network. It cannot be reached from outside and reveals nothing. The public address is what websites log, what a game host sees and what a lookup service maps to a city.
When a support agent asks how do you check IP address settings, find out which one they need. For connection problems inside the house it is the private one. For anything about a website or an online service it is the public one.
What an IP address check tells you
- ▸The public address, IPv4 and often IPv6.
- ▸The provider that owns the range.
- ▸An approximate location, sometimes a town or two away from you.
- ▸Whether the range belongs to a home provider, a mobile network or a data centre.
- ▸With a VPN on: the server's address and the hosting company in place of your own.
Good habits
- ✓Do not post your public address in forums or game chats. It is not dangerous by itself, but it attracts nuisance.
- ✓Restart the router if you want a new dynamic address. It works on most home lines.
- ✓Use a VPN on public Wi-Fi so the address and the traffic belong to the tunnel, not to you.
- ✓Check for an IPv6 address as well. A tunnel that covers only IPv4 leaves it visible.

How do I find my IP address quickly?
Search what IP address in a search engine. The public address is shown at the top of the results.
How can you find IP address details for one device at home?
Look in that device's network settings, or in the router's list of connected clients. Those are private addresses.
Is my IP address the same on Wi-Fi and mobile data?
No. Wi-Fi uses your home provider's address and mobile data uses the carrier's. They are different networks.
Can two devices have the same public address?
Yes. Everything behind one router shares it, and on mobile networks many customers share one.
Does my IP address find my exact location?
No. It gives a rough area based on the provider's registration, not on GPS.
Does the address change when I use a VPN key?
Yes. Sites see the address of the location you picked. Your own address is visible only to the VPN server.
