VPN for OS X: what works on an older Mac

The name OS X was retired years ago, but people still search for it. What matters is the system version, because current clients need a reasonably recent one.

Short answer for OS X users

A VPN for OS X depends on the version of the system, not on the name. Apple used OS X until El Capitan, then renamed it macOS with Sierra in 2016. A Mac on a very old release may be too old for the free clients we point to, because those apps are built for supported macOS versions and their App Store pages list a minimum.

So the first step takes thirty seconds. Open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac, and read the version. Then compare it with the minimum on the client's page.

Checking whether your Mac qualifies

  1. 1Choose About This Mac from the Apple menu and note the version name or number.
  2. 2Search for V2Box in the Mac App Store, or open the Hiddify releases page on GitHub.
  3. 3Read the minimum system requirement on that page.
  4. 4If your version is lower, check whether the Mac can be upgraded through Software Update.
  5. 5If it cannot, use the same key on a phone or a newer computer instead.

How the BSR key fits

The service is a vless:// line from @bsr_key_bot, not a program for the Mac. Any client that reads VLESS can take it, and the ten free days require no card or account. One key covers five devices, so an old Mac can share it with a phone while you decide.

What to expect on an older system

  • Fewer client choices. Some current builds simply do not install.
  • No promise from us about any particular version. The client's own page is the authority.
  • Security updates matter more than the VPN. A tunnel does not patch an unsupported system.
  • Browsers on old releases may also stop updating, which is a separate risk worth knowing about.
  • The tunnel itself behaves the same once a client runs.

Is it worth keeping an old Mac online?

If the Mac no longer receives updates from Apple, treat it as a machine for low-risk tasks. With a VPN, people on the same Wi-Fi and your internet provider cannot read what you send. It does not repair a browser with known flaws. Using the key on a newer device for sensitive things is the sensible split.

Planning around the age of the machine

Many people searching this way have a perfectly good Mac that Apple stopped updating. That is a legitimate reason to ask whether a tunnel still helps, and the answer is partly yes. The tunnel protects traffic on shared networks, such as a library or a hotel, whatever the system version is. What it cannot do is fix a missing security patch.

If the Mac is the only computer you have, keep a current browser if one still installs, avoid entering payment details on it, and use the key on a phone for anything sensitive. If the client will not install at all, the BSR key remains valid for other devices while you look at what an upgrade or replacement would take.

The ten free days are enough to confirm whether any client runs at all before you decide anything else.

Questions people ask before the first key

Was OS X renamed macOS at some point?

Yes, it is the earlier name of the same system. The change came in 2016 with Sierra.

Which version of the system do I need?

It depends on the client. Read the minimum listed on its App Store or GitHub page.

Can I use the key on my iPhone instead?

Yes. The same key works on up to five devices, so a phone can carry it while the Mac stays unused.

Does the VPN make an unsupported Mac safe?

No. It protects traffic in transit, not the system itself.

Is there a BSR app for the Mac?

No. We do not ship our own program; any free client will do, and you just paste the key into it.

Still unsure?

Support and your key live in the same Telegram bot. The setup page shows which client to install.
