Router as VPN: the short answer
Running the tunnel on the router means that every device behind it, including smart TVs, consoles and guests' phones, uses the VPN without installing anything. It counts as one connection out of the five your key allows. The catch is the hardware. Most home routers that advertise VPN support mean OpenVPN or WireGuard. For a VLESS key you need a router that runs OpenWrt or similar open firmware with a sing-box or Xray package installed. That is realistic for someone comfortable with a router's admin pages, and not for everyone.
If the goal is one TV or one console, there are easier ways to share a tunnel, described below.
When VPNs for routers are the right tool
- Devices that cannot run a client: smart TVs, consoles and streaming boxes without an app store.
- A household where you do not want to set up every phone and laptop separately.
- A travel router that turns hotel Wi-Fi into your own protected network.
- A permanent region change for one room, for example a TV kept on a US location.
- Not ideal when family members need different locations, or when some apps refuse VPN addresses.
What hardware can do it
Look for routers supported by OpenWrt with at least 128 MB of memory and a reasonably recent processor, because encryption runs on the router's CPU and a weak one will limit your speed. Many GL.iNet travel routers ship with OpenWrt underneath and accept additional packages. On stock firmware from the large consumer brands the VPN client menu will not accept a vless:// key, whatever the box says about routers and VPN support.
Flashing firmware can void the warranty, and a mistake can leave the router unusable. If that prospect worries you, choose one of the simpler methods.
Outline of a router setup
- 1Confirm that your model is supported on the OpenWrt hardware list, and install the firmware following that project's instructions.
- 2Install a sing-box or Xray based package from the firmware's package manager.
- 3Get the key from @bsr_key_bot in Telegram. Five days are free, and that is enough to test the whole setup.
- 4Paste the vless:// line into the package's import field and choose which devices or networks go through the tunnel.
- 5Check from a device behind the router that the IP address has changed and that DNS does not leak.
Simpler ways to share a tunnel
- Windows: run the client in TUN mode and turn on the mobile hotspot. Devices that join the hotspot use the tunnel.
- Any desktop client: enable allow connections from LAN, then enter the computer's address and port as the proxy on the TV or console.
- Android: some clients can share the tunnel over a hotspot, depending on the phone.
- Fire TV and Android TV: install v2rayNG directly. No router work is needed.
- A VPN to VPN router chain, meaning one VPN router behind another, is rarely worth the complexity.
Downsides to weigh

Can my ISP supplied router run the key?
Almost never. Provider routers run locked firmware. Put your own OpenWrt router behind it instead.
Does a router count as one device on the key?
Yes. The router holds one connection, and everything behind it shares that connection.
Will a router VPN slow my internet down?
It can. Encryption runs on the router's CPU. A modern mid range router handles typical home speeds, and older models may not.
Is there a ready made router with VLESS support?
