What a web proxy handles well and badly
- Works: reading a news article or a static page that a school or office filter blocks.
- Works sometimes: search engines and simple forums.
- Usually breaks: video platforms, social networks, web apps, anything with heavy scripts.
- Unsafe: logging in to any account, payments, webmail.
- Does nothing for other apps on the device. Only the tab inside the proxy is affected.
Why so many of them are free
Running a proxy costs money, so the free ones earn from advertising injected into the pages you view, or from the traffic data itself. Some are operated by people you would not hand your browsing history to if they asked. Filters also add popular proxies to their blocklists within days, which is why lists of working proxies go stale so quickly.
A proxy that serves you over plain HTTP is worse still, because the local network can read everything as well. If you use one at all, make sure the address bar shows HTTPS on the proxy's own page.

Is a free web proxy safe?
For reading a public page, mostly. For anything with a login, no. The proxy operator can see what passes through it.
Why does the page look broken inside a proxy?
Because the proxy rewrites links and often removes scripts. Sites built as web apps stop working when that happens.
Does a web proxy hide my IP address?
From the site you visit, yes. It shows the proxy's address. The proxy itself sees your real one.
What is the difference between a proxy and a VPN?

Will a proxy work on school Wi-Fi?
