What is protected and what is not
- •Cloud chats, groups and channels: encrypted in transit and stored on Telegram's servers.
- •Secret Chats: end to end encrypted, tied to one device, with optional self destruct timers.
- •Voice and video calls between two people: end to end encrypted.
- •Your phone number: required for an account, and hidden from other users if you set it that way.
- •Metadata such as IP addresses and the phone number: Telegram states that it may disclose these to authorities in response to valid legal requests.
Settings that make an account safer
- 1Turn on Two-Step Verification under Privacy and Security. It adds a password on top of the SMS code.
- 2Set Phone Number visibility to Nobody, and choose who may find you by your number.
- 3Review Active Sessions and terminate the ones you do not recognise.
- 4Use Secret Chats for anything sensitive, and check the encryption key picture with the other person.
- 5Be wary of login codes that arrive unrequested. Never pass one to anybody.
What a bot can see
A Telegram bot sees only what you send it, together with your public profile: display name, username and a numeric user ID. It does not see your phone number unless you press a button that shares it. It cannot read your other chats, your contacts or your location. Bots are ordinary programs run by third parties, so the real question is what the bot's operator does with the messages you send.
@bsr_key_bot needs nothing beyond the chat itself. It never asks for a phone number, an email or a contact list. It issues a key, shows the terms if you ask for them and answers support questions. A key cannot be tied to a person by us, because we never collect anything that identifies one.
Common risks that have nothing to do with encryption
- ✓Fake support accounts and fake bots with near identical names. Check the username letter by letter.
- ✓Links to login pages that ask for your Telegram code.
- ✓Files from strangers, especially installers and APK files.
- ✓Investment and giveaway groups, which are nearly always scams.
- ✓SIM swap attacks. Two-step verification is the defence.
Telegram and a VPN
A tunnel hides the fact that you use Telegram from the local network, along with your IP address from Telegram. That matters on networks that block the app and in countries that restrict it. It does not change what Telegram stores about your chats. Where Telegram is blocked, get the key before you need it, because the bot lives on the platform that is being blocked.

Questions people ask before the first key
Is Telegram safe for private conversations?
Use Secret Chats for those. Regular chats are encrypted in transit but are stored on Telegram's servers.
Can Telegram read my messages?
It can technically read cloud chats, because it holds the keys. It cannot read Secret Chats.
Is it safe to use a Telegram bot?
A bot sees only what you send it and your public profile. Judge the operator, and never share codes or passwords with a bot.
Does @bsr_key_bot get my phone number?
No. Telegram does not give phone numbers to bots unless you explicitly share one, and ours never asks.
Should I use Telegram on public Wi-Fi?
Yes, it is encrypted in transit. A VPN additionally hides the fact that you use it and protects your other apps.
Is Telegram safer than WhatsApp or Signal?
Signal encrypts everything end to end by default. Telegram does so only in Secret Chats. For sensitive conversations that difference matters.
