v2rayNG in short

v2rayNG is a free, open source Android app that turns a vless:// key into a system wide VPN connection. It comes from the same developer as v2rayN for Windows and is available on Google Play and as an APK on GitHub. It has no accounts, no advertising and no servers of its own. You add a key, press the round button and Android shows the key icon in the status bar.

It runs on phones, tablets, Android TV and Fire TV devices, so one guide covers most Android hardware in a household.

Install and connect

1Install v2rayNG from Google Play. If the store is unavailable, download the APK from the releases page of 2dust/v2rayNG on GitHub.

2Open @bsr_key_bot in Telegram and request the five free days. The bot sends a vless:// line and a QR image.

3In v2rayNG tap the plus sign. Choose Import config from QR code, or Import config from clipboard.

4Tap the new entry to select it, then tap the round button at the bottom.

5Accept Android's connection request. When the button changes colour and the key icon appears, you are connected.

Settings worth changing

▸Per-app proxy: route only chosen apps, or exclude apps that dislike VPN addresses, such as some banking apps.

▸Always-on VPN in Android settings: reconnects after a reboot or a network change.

▸Block connections without VPN: nothing leaves the phone outside the tunnel.

▸Battery: exclude v2rayNG from battery optimisation so the system does not stop it overnight.

▸Routing: keep local network traffic direct, so printers and casting keep working.

Choosing the right APK

If you install from GitHub, the releases page lists several files. Most modern phones need the arm64-v8a build. The universal APK works everywhere and is larger. Android will ask you to allow installation from your browser or file manager. Grant it for this one install and switch it off again afterwards. Never install a build from a mirror site or a Telegram channel. A modified VPN client is the worst kind of modified app.

When something does not work

✓The import fails: the clipboard holds only part of the line. Copy it again from the first character.

✓It connects but no pages load: check the phone's date and time, then try another location.

✓It disconnects in the background: fix the battery optimisation setting for the app.

✓A single app misbehaves: exclude it in Per-app proxy and open it directly.

✓The key was lost: open the bot, and it will show the key again. There is no password to recover.

On Android TV and Fire TV

Install v2rayNG from the store if it is listed for your device, or sideload the APK. Typing a long key with a remote control is painful, so send the key to the TV through a clipboard sharing app, or install the Telegram app on the TV and copy the key from the bot chat. After the first import the TV needs nothing more than the connect button.

Questions people ask before the first key

Is v2rayNG safe?

It is open source and widely used. Install it from Google Play or from the original GitHub repository only.

Does v2rayNG need root?

No. It uses Android's standard VPN interface and asks for that permission once.

What is the difference between v2rayNG and v2rayN?

v2rayNG is the Android app and v2rayN is the Windows program. They come from the same developer and read the same keys.

Why does Android show a key icon?

That icon means a VPN connection is active. It disappears when you disconnect.

Can I use v2rayNG without Google Play?

Yes. Download the APK from the project's GitHub releases page and install it manually.

Does it drain the battery?

A little while data is moving. Excluding it from battery optimisation prevents disconnects without any noticeable extra drain.
