V2Ray explained: the core, its forks and your VLESS key
The name V2Ray is used for a project, a core program and a family of clients. Sorting these out makes any key easier to understand.

What the name covers
V2Ray started as a platform for building network proxies and grew into the core that many apps use. People often say v2ray when they mean any of three things: the original core, a client that bundles a core, or the older config format. Context decides, and this page separates them.
The core is the engine that opens connections. A client is the app around it, with buttons, scanners and server lists. A key, such as the vless:// line from the BSR bot, is a set of instructions that the engine follows.
The pieces in plain terms
V2Ray, Xray and why it matters
Xray-core began as a fork of the V2Ray code and added its own features, among them the XTLS family and the Reality transport. According to the project's own page it supports VLESS, XTLS and Reality. That matters for a key like ours, which uses VLESS over Reality, because the client must ship a core that understands Reality. Most current clients do, but an old build of anything labelled v2ray may not.
Where BSR fits
BSR does not ship a core or a client. The service issues the key, you choose a free client, and the client decides which core runs underneath. The Clients section lists apps for each device: v2rayN on Windows, v2rayNG on Android, V2Box and Streisand on iPhone. If a client rejects the link, the first thing to check is the client version.
Before you rely on a v2ray client
Reading a v2ray link
A link starts with the protocol name, followed by an identifier, the server address and port, and a list of parameters after a question mark. For Reality those parameters name the transport, the security mode and a public key. You never need to edit them. If a client says the link is invalid, the cause is nearly always a truncated copy, so paste it again from the bot.
What v2ray is not
It is not a service. There is no company behind the name that sells connections, and a client does not come with servers. Anyone who offers a v2ray subscription is selling servers, and the quality depends on them. Ask what is kept about you, how many devices a key covers and what happens when the term ends, exactly as you would for any other service. It is also not a promise of anonymity: it moves traffic through a server you pick, and that server's operator sees where you connect.

Notes to the statement
Questions people ask before the first key
Is VLESS just another name for V2Ray?
No. V2Ray is software, and VLESS is one of the protocols such software speaks.
Must I download the core separately before using a client?
No. Clients such as v2rayN or v2rayNG already include a core.
What is Xray?
A project forked from the V2Ray code that adds features including Reality. Many clients let you pick between cores.
Why is the app called v2rayNG if it runs Xray?
Names stay from history. Check the release notes to see which core a given version ships.
Does a v2ray client need an account?
No. It reads a key you import. Accounts belong to the service that issues the key.
Can I use the same key in several clients?
Yes, as long as each supports the protocol options in the link.
Still unsure?
Support and your key live in the same Telegram bot. The setup page shows which client to install.
